The Elanthian Times
Volume Two, Issue 1 -- March 2000

Letter from the Editors

Greetings, all.

After a lot of work the newest edition of the Elanthian Times is in your hands. It took us a while to get things straightened out, but here it is. The Elanthian Times will officially be a quarterly newsletter. After some discussion, the editors have decided that, if submissions are plentiful, we will make every effort to have a new issue of the Times available every month. We can't guarantee this, but, if you, our readers, keep our mailsacks full, we can easily accomplish this.

You may notice some sections that were included with the older versions of the paper have been omitted. There are several reasons for this, but, most importantly, it boils down to the fact that we didn't have the submissions we needed to fill all the categories. So, we encourage you to submit. Anything you have, art, fiction, poems, whatever. If it's something suitable, submit it. We may not use it right away, but we will make every effort to use it. Read our submission guidelines carefully, however, so you can save yourself the trouble of submitting the same item several times.

Some of you who have submitted may see that your submission isn't being used. It's nothing personal, we promise. Just as the guidelines say, we have to evaluate each submission, and make sure it's something that will be of interest to a broad spectrum of people. Some articles simply aren't suitable, in that regard. A lot of poems came into our mail bags, as well. We didn't use all of them, and for that we sincerely apologize. The majority of the submissions we've received to date are excellent. Don't lose heart. We keep all submissions on file, and evaluate them for use as possible, and as space permits.

We also held back a lot of the poems and fiction pieces because we have a plan. Since the Times is supposed to be a quarterly publication, we plan on, each quarter, releasing a larger version of the normal monthly paper. In this larger publication, we plan on including the things you'd expect in a normal monthly version of the Times, along with a hearty helping of fiction and poetry.

We hope you're as excited to see the Elanthian Times as we are and we look forward to seeing our mailbags overflowing with submissions.

A quick note from the Elanthian Times technical staff:

I'm viewing the Times and everything is messed up! The fonts look all weird and the pictures aren't displaying right. Some of the backgrounds are even only covering part of the window. What's wrong?

We need to point out a couple of things about the Times. The primary font used throughout is Arial. If you don't have that font, download it and install it. That will solve that particular problem. As far as the text and picture alignment, that's another problem entirely. The Times was designed to be displayed in a full screen window at a minimum resolution of 1024x768. If the Times isn't viewed at the recommended resolution, there may be a few errors in picture and text alignment. For those of you with small monitors, we apologize in advance. It has also come to our attention that on some systems, the backgrounds don't display properly. Honestly, we have no idea how to fix that one, besides suggesting getting another system.

Deadlines being what they are, it's difficult for us to fix every display bug that hits us right out of the gate. We apologize for any problems you might be having with the Times, but we're doing the best we can. Feel free to email us at ElanthianTimes@play.net with any errors or bugs you might find. We can't make any promises, but we'll try as hard as we can to make the Times an enjoyable experience, both intellectually and visually for anyone reading it. Translated, that means we'll squash the bugs when and where we can.
